Bread of Life

I.    INTRODUCTION:

A. SCRIPTURE READING: John 6:30-63.

B. WHAT IS THE BREAD OF LIFE:

    1. It was both:
  1. The Word of God. John 1:1 = "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

  2. The Word was made flesh, the Son of God. John 1:14 = "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (an we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."

    1. This was that which is the bread of life:
    2. [John 6:33] "For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. ….." [John 6:48] "I am that bread of life. ….." [John 6:51] "I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. ….." [John 6:57-58] "As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever."

    3. The bread of life is therefore:

      a.    The Word of God
      b.    The Lord Himself used the bread of His disciples were to eat as His body. Matthew 26:26 = "And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, take, eat; this is my body."
  1. WHAT THEN SHOULD BE A CHRISTIAN’S ATTITUDE TOWARD THE BREAD OF LIFE AS IT IS SPOKEN OF IN THREE WAYS AND YET IN EACH WAY IT HAS REFERENCE TO THE LORD?
    1. We will study the BREAD OF LIFE from a general approach considering all three ways with Jesus as the central element.
    2. The approach will be using an outline form that is called an acrostic – "a composition in which one or more sets of letters when taken in order, form the outline of presentation."
    3. We will therefore use the letters in "Bread of Life" to form the basis of our outline of study:
  1. DISCUSSION:
  2. B - BLESS IT.

Matthew 26:26 = And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, take, eat; this is my body."

Luke 22:19 = "And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, this is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me."

Ephesians 6:18-20 = "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak."

    R - REVERE IT.

John 6:35 = "And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst."

1 Corinthians 11:21-22 = "For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken. What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not."

Romans 1:16 = "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek."

    E - EAT IT FREQUENTLY.

John 6:51 = "I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."

Acts 20:7 = "And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight."

    A - ACCEPT IT HEARTILY.

John 6:48-50 = "I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die."

Acts 4:12 = "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

D - DAY BY DAY DIGEST IT (MENTALLY ASSIMILATE IT).

John 6:57 = "As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me."

Acts 17:11 = "These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so."

2 Timothy 2:15 = "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

    O - OPPOSE IT NEVER.

John 6:36 = "But I said unto you, that ye also have seen me, and believe not."

John 12:48-50 = "He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak."

    F - FREELY DISPENSE IT.

John 14:6 = "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

John 17:1-3 = "These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: as thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. ….. [John 17:8] For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. … [John 17:18] As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world."

Matthew 28:19-20 = "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."

    L - LIVE BY IT.

John 6:53 = "Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you."

1 Peter 2:21 = "For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:"

1 Timothy 4:16 = "Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee."

    I - IMPLICITLY TRUST IT.

John 6:63 = "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life."

John 14:6 = "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

Acts 4:12 = "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

1 Corinthians 3:11 = "For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ."

    F - FOREVER FOLLOW IT.

John 6:66-69 = "From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God."

Matthew 10:22 = "And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved."

Revelation 2:10 = "Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life."

E - ENJOY THE BLESSINGS OF IT.

John 6:58 = "This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. … John: 58:67-68 = Then said Jesus unto the twelve, will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life."

Romans 6:23 = "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

I John 5:20 = "And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life."

  3. CONCLUSION:
  1. IT IS HOPED THAT THIS WILL BRING BEFORE US A BETTER APPRECIATION OF THAT WHICH HAS COME FROM GOD:
    1. The gift of God’s saving Word.
    2. The gift of God’s Son, Jesus Christ.
    3. The proper respect of the Son’s body and blood represented in the partaking of the Lord’s Supper.
  1. IF WE DO NOT HAVE THE PROPER RESPECT FOR WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN AND IN THE WAY WE CONDUCT OURSELVES REGARDING IT, DO NOT EXPECT IT TO BE PLEASING TO GOD.
