Do You Preach a Practical Religion

I.          INTRODUCTION:

A.  QUESTION ASKED:  “DO  YOU PREACH A PRACTICAL RELIGION?”

Comment:    The one that asked this question certainly did not understand the meaning of the word “practical”.   As I asked him what he meant by “practical” and his reply was:  “Do you preach the old out-dated religion, or that which is more relevant to the man today and his liking”?  He is like many thousands today that are confused concerning what is true religion due to the vagueness and lack of sound preaching that has been forthcoming over the last fifty years.

B.        PREACHING TODAY CAN BE CLASSED INTO SEVERAL CATEGORIES.

1.        Conventional --  That kind of preaching that is the result of a group of delegates, or members, in general agreement have formed that which they want preached to declare their customs, forms of activities, and worship that is particular to them and not those of the established church.

2.        Contemporary  --  That kind of  preaching that is relevant to the current desires of man, or the present existing period of time.

3.        Traditional  --  That kind of preaching that has been handed down through time for man to belief and practice.   This may be subdivided into:

a.         That which has been left in its pure state as delivered by Christ direct from God and given to man to preach for his salvation.

b.         That which has been given to man in God’s Word -- The Bible -- blended with the traditions (both written and oral) which men have intermingled with God’s Word  to their liking.

c.         That which is an intermingling of various traditions of men from years past separate and apart from any teachings of The Bible

4.        Relevant  --  That kind of preaching that meets the desires of man in his life style of today.  Basically the kind of preaching that accepts everyone no matter what their lifestyle might be.

a.         That it is all right for man to worship as he  desires and not God.

b.         That it is all right to wear  immodest apparel  worn to meet the styles of today and not the modesty of a child of God.  The assembling in dress that pleases man and not God.

c.         That it is all right living in ways that pleases worldly man:  Lesbians; Gays;  Homosexuals,  and Etc..

C.       THE ANSWER THAT I GAVE  HIM WAS:  “YES, I PREACH A PRACTICAL RELIGION”?

1.        I preach only that contained in the Bible that God has given for man through His Son Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 1:1-4  --  God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;  Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;  Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

Hebrews 12:2  =  Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

2.        I preach only that which is God given as He alone knows the needs of man.  [See John 1:1 & John1:14]

a.         God Created man.

Genesis 1:27  =  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

b.         God’s Son knows our every temptation.

Hebrews 4:15-16  =  For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.  Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

I Corinthians 10:13  =  There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

3.        I preach only that inspired Word of God that will make man perfect in every good work.

II Timothy 3:16-17  =  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

D.       THERE IS NOTHING MORE PRACTICAL THAN THE BIBLE, SO LET LOOK AT JUST HOW PRACTICAL THE WORD OF GOD IS.

II.       DISCUSSION:

A.  BIBLE DOCTRINE IS PRACTICAL.

1.        False doctrine makes one’s worship and service to God  to be in vain.

Matthew 15:9  =  But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Ephesians 4:14-15  =  That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;  But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

1 Timothy 1:3-4  =  As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,  Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.

2 Timothy 4:3-4  =  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;  And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Conclusion:   Therefore,  sound (or true) doctrine is practical.

2.        False doctrine keeps one from having God.

2 John 9  =  Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

Conclusion:  Therefore, sound (or true) doctrine is practical to having God.

3.        False doctrine can not save man.

I Timothy 4:16  =  Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

Conclusion:  Therefore, sound (or true) doctrine is practical for salvation.

4.        False doctrine is either less, or more than, the true doctrine.

Revelation 22:18-19  =  For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:  And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

Conclusion:  Therefore, sound (or true) doctrine is practical to let us know whether something has been removed or added to the doctrine.

5.        The teaching of false doctrine leads one away from the truth.

Ephesians 4:11-16  =  And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;  For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:  Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:  That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;  But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:  From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

1 Corinthians 16:13  =  Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.

Jude 3  =  Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

Conclusion: Therefore, sound (or true) doctrine is practical as it will keep one from being tossed about by every false doctrine.

6.        False doctrine is the teaching of man to sooth the itching ears of man.

II Timothy 4:3-4  =  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;  And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Conclusion:  Therefore, sound (or true) doctrine is practical in teaching doctrine that pleases God and not than which pleases man.

B.        THE DOCTRINE OF THE  BIBLE IS PRACTICAL FOR PROPER DEVELOPMENT.

1.        The constant teaching of it stirs up our minds and keeps us from forgetting it.

II Peter 3:1-2  =  This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:  That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:

1 Peter 5:8-9  =  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:  Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

2.        The teaching of it feeds the soul for proper development.

I Peter 2:2  =  As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

Ephesians 4:15-16  =  But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:  From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

III.    CONCLUSION:

A.  SALVATION IS THE MOST PRACTICAL ASPECT OF BIBLE DOCTRINE.

1.        Christ left us a practical message of salvation.

Matthew 28:19-20  =  Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:  Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

2.        There is no other way to the Heavenly Father than through Christ His Son.  There is no other practical way for salvation.

John 14:6  =  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

a.         This Word giving us the way  of salvation came from God not man.  John 1:1  =  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

b.         This Word became flesh and lived among man.

John 1:14  =  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

c.         This Word was the truth that Christ prayed His Father was to sanctify his disciples.

John 17:17  =  Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

d.         This Word, or gospel, is the way man is called unto salvation.

2 Thessalonians 2:14  =  Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

B.        WHEN ONE SAYS HE WANTS A “PRACTICAL RELIGION” --  FOR WHOM IS HE WANTING IT PRACTICAL FOR?

1.        Practical to do what you want to do?    Or

2.        Practical to do what God wants you to do?

3.        Practical is defined broadly --  “Capable of being useful to some useful end”

C.       THE PRACTICAL END OF RELIGION IS TO SAVE SOULS.

1.        Will you put it to that useful end in your life?

2.        Be practical – there is no other way but this!
