Doing Good

  1. INTRODUCTION:

    1. SCRIPTURE: Acts 10:38 = "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him."
      1. This statement was made by Peter at the house of Cornelius.
      2. The statement from this verse is a brief summary of the life of Christ.
    2. THE LIFE OF CHRIST WAS INVOLVED IN DOING GOOD WORKS AND DEEDS.
    3. GO WITH ME FOR A FEW MOMENTS AS WE REVIEW THE "DOING GOOD" OF CHRIST.

  2. DISCUSSION:

    1. WE START AT HIS AGE OF TWELVE.
      1. He was about His Fathers business. Luke 2:49 = "And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?"
      2. He was subject to His parents. Luke 2:51 = "And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart."
    2. AT HIS BAPTISM:
      1. Christ did good when he was baptized. Matthew 3:13-17 = "Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
      2. He fulfilled "all righteousness".
    3. RESISTING TEMPTATION:
      1. He did good in resisting the temptations of the devil.
      2. Matthew 4:1-11 = "Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him."

      3. It is good that we do the same.

James 4:7-8 = "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded."

    4. HE DID GOOD WHEN HE TAUGHT THE DISCIPLES TO PRAY.
    5. Matthew 6:9-13 = "After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen."

    6. HE DID GOOD BY STILLING THE SEA FOR THE SCARED DISCIPLES.
    7. Matthew 8:23-27 = "And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!"

    8. HE DID GOOD BY HEALING PETER’S MOTHER-IN-LAW.
    9. Matthew 8:14-15 = "And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them."

    10. HE DID GOOD WHEN HE HEALED THE TEN LEPERS.
    11. Luke 17:11-19 = "And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole."

      Note: Only one showed appreciation.

    12. HE SHOWED GOOD "FRIENDLINESS TOWARD SINNERS.
      1. He ate with them. Matthew 9:11-12 = "And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick."
      2. He befriended the adulterous woman. John 8:1-11 = "Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more."
    13. HE RETURNED GOOD FOR EVIL.
      1. He restored the ear of an enemy. Luke 22:51 = "And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him."
      2. He prayed for His murderers. Luke 23:34 = "Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots."
    14. HE DID BENEVOLENT GOOD WHEN HE FED THE MULTITUDE.
    15. Matthew 14:15-21 = "And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. He said, Bring them hither to me. And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children."

    16. HE DID GOOD WHEN HE KEPT PETER FROM SINKING INTO THE SEA.
    17. Matthew 14:31 = "And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?"

Note: That same outstretched hand is extended out to us to keep us from sinking into sin.

    18. THE GOOD DEEDS OF CHRIST CAUSED A WOMAN TO SAY WITHIN HERSELF: "…If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole." = Matthew 9:21.
    19. HE DID GOOD WHEN HE WASHED THE DISCIPLES FEET.
    20. John 13:4-5 = "He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded."

    21. HE DID GOOD WHEN HE BUILT THE CHURCH..
    22. Matthew 16:18 = "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

    23. HE DID GOOD WHEN HE PRAYED FOR ALL THAT BELIEVE ON HIM TO BE ONE.
    24. John 17:20-21 = "Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me."

    25. HIS LOVING GOODNESS WAS MANIFEST AT THE TOMB OF LAZARUS.
      1. He wept.
      2. John 11:35 = "Jesus wept."

Romans 12:15 = "Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep."

      3. He raised Lazarus.
    26. HIS GOODNESS WAS MANIFEST WHEN HE BLESSED LITTLE CHILDREN.
    27. Matthew 19:14 = "But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven."

    28. HE DID GOOD WHEN HE LOOKED AT PETER AND CAUSED HIM TO REMEMBER WHAT HE HAD SAID.
    29. Luke 22:61 = "And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice."

    30. HE DID GOOD WHEN HE SAW TO THE EARTHLY NEEDS OF HIS MOTHER.

John 19:25-27 = "Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home."

  3. CONCLUSION:

    1. THE CROWNING GOODNESS WAS DYING FOR MAN.
    2. Matthew 26:28 = "For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins."

    3. CHRIST STILL IS DOING GOOD FOR MAN.
      1. Preparing a place for eternity.
      2. John 14:1-4 = "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know."

      3. Always being with those that obey His commandments.
      4. Matthew 28:20 = "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."

      5. Serving as our High Priest.

Hebrews 4:14-16 = "Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need."

    4. WHAT GOOD ARE YOU DOING?
      1. Don’t you want to be a recipient of Christ’s goodness?
      2. Only a continued follower of His goodness will result in an entrance in His heavenly home.
