Eye Offend Thee Pluck It Out

I.          INTRODUCTION:

A.       SCRIPTURE READINGS:

Matthew 5:29-30  =  And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.  And if thy right hand offend thee, cut if off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Mark 9:43-50  =  And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:  Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.  And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:  Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.  And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:  Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.  For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.  Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.

B.        JESUS USED THE RIGHT EYE AND THE RIGHT HAND TO TEACH THAT THE DEAREST OBJECTS MUST BE ABANDONED IF THEY CAUSE US TO SIN.

1.        The right eye was considered more serviceable than the left, particularly in battle.

2.        The right hand was considered more serviceable than the left.

C.       JESUS TEACHES AT LEAST FOUR LESSONS:

1.        The value of the soul.

2.        The danger of sin.

3.        The wrath to come.

4.        The necessity of discipline.

II.       DISCUSSION:

A.  THE VALUE OF THE SOUL:

1.        The soul is worth more than any member of the body.

2.        The soul is worth than all the world.

Matthew 16:26  =  For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

3.        The soul cannot be destroyed by man.

Matthew 10:28  =  And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

4.        The soul is the object of God’s love.

John 3:16  =  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Romans 5:8  =  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

B.        THE DANGER OF SIN:

1.        Sin cause the Antediluvian world to be destroyed by flood  [Genesis 6 & 7].

2.        Sin brought forth God’s destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah [Genesis 18 & 19].

3.        Sin is a reproach to any people.

Proverbs 14:34  =  Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.

Proverbs 16:7  =  When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.”

4.        Sin will bring forth death.

James 1:15  =  Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

Romans 6:23  =  For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Ezekiel 18:20  =  The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

5.        Sin will send the soul to hell.

Matthew 5:29  =  And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Matthew 10:28  =  And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

C.       THE WRATH TO COME:

1.        The soul that sinneth shall die.

Ezekiel 18:20  =  The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

Romans 6:23  =  For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Revelation 21:8  =  But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

2.        The soul that sinneth will be cast into hell.

Matthew 5:29  =  And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.”

Matthew 10:28  =  And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

3.        The soul that sinneth will be punished with everlasting punishment.

Matthew 25:41  =  Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:Matthew 25:46 = "And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Revelation 14:9-11  =  And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,  The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:  And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

Mark 9:43-48  =  And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:  Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

D.       THE NECESSITY OF DISCIPLINE:

1.        We must discipline ourselves to the extent of plucking out an eye or cutting off a hand if such should be necessary in order to keep from sinning.

2.        We must put away the lust and passion.

Colossians 3:5  =  Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

Galatians 5:19-21  =  Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,  Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,  Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

3.        We must abstain from evil.

1 Thessalonians 5:21-22  =  Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.  Abstain from all appearance of evil.”

Romans 12:9  =  Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

4.        We must keep our hearts pure.

Proverbs 23:7  =  For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

Proverbs 4:23  =  Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

Matthew 12:34-35  =  O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.  A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

Luke 6:45  =  A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

III.    CONCLUSION:

A.  UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES CAN WE AFFORD TO LOSE OUR SOULS.

B.   WHATEVER HINDERS US SPIRITUALLY, WE MUST GIVE IT UP REGARDLESS OF THE COST.

C.  HOW MUCH IS YOUR SOUL SALVATION WORTH TO YOU?
