The Heart Of Man

I.       INTRODUCTION:

A.     SCRIPTURE READING:  I Samuel 16:1-14.  Note: I Samuel 16:7 =  But the Lord said unto Samuel, look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature:  because I have refused him:  for the Lord seeth not as man seeth;  for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

B.     WHY WAS IT SO IMPORTANT FOR THE LORD TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE HEART?    Let’s turn to the Bible for the answer:

II.    DISCUSSION:

A.     THE HEART LEADS ONE TO OBEDIENCE.

Romans 6:17  =  But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

Deuteronomy 5:29  =  O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever.

B.     THE HEART DETERMINES THE WAY OF LIFE.

Proverbs 4:23  =  Keep thy heart with all diligence;.  For out of it are the issues of life.

C.    THE HEART OF AN HONEST PERSON WILL RECEIVE AND KEEP THE TRUTH.

Luke 8:15 =  But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

D.    THE HEART IS PRONE TO DO EVIL, AND IS HESITANT TO ACT SWIFTLY AGAINST EVIL.

Ecclesiastes 8:11  =  Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedly, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

E.     THE HEART IS DECEITFUL.

Jeremiah 17:9-10  =  The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked:  who can know it?  I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give  every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

COMMENT:  Due to this deceitful  working of the heart, judgment will not be based on the outward appearance, but on the inward appearance of the heart

Hebrews 4:12-13  =  For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.  Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight:  but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do."

Revelation 2:23  =  And I will kill her children with death;  and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts:  and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

F.     THE HEART IS WHERE EVIL IS CONCEIVED.

Matthew 15:19-20  = “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:  these are the things which defile a man:  but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

Matthew 5:27-28  =  “:Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, thou shalt not commit adultery:  but I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

G.    THE HEART LEADS MAN INTO UNBELIEF.

Hebrews 3:12  =  Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

III. CONCLUSION:

A.     NOW WE CAN UNDERSTAND WHY THE LORD WANTS HIS LAWS WRITTEN  IN THE HEART”

Hebrews 8:6-10  =  But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.  For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.  For finding fault with them, he saith, behold, the days come, saith the Lord when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:  not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt;  because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.  For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord;  I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts:  and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

Hebrews 10:16  =  This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them.

B.     NOW WE CAN APPRECIATE THE WISDOM OF SOLOMON WHEN HE SAID:

Proverbs 23:7  =  For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:  Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

C.    LET US STAND TOGETHER AND SING: IS THY HEART RIGHT WITH GOD?
