In The Name Of Jesus Christ

  1. INTRODUCTION:
    1. SCRIPTURE READING:
Col. 3:17 = "And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him."
    2. THERE IS IMPORTANCE ATTACHED TO A NAME:
      1. When we become married:
        1. A woman leaves her old name and takes the name of her husband.
        2. She is called by his name.
        3. She writes in his name.
        4. She speaks in his name.
        5. She transact s business in his name.
        6. She honors his name.
      2. When we become a Christian -- we are joined to Christ in spiritual wedlock.
        1. We leave the old name and take upon ourselves the name of Christ.
        2. We wear His name.
        3. We do all of our talking and working in His name.
        4. We do all that is done by His authority.
        5. We glorify, honor and praise His name.
  2. DISCUSSION: IN HIS NAME CHRISTIANS --
    1. WE ASSEMBLE TOGETHER:
Matt 18:20 = "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."
    2. WE PROCLAIM GOD'S WORD:
Luke 24:46-47 = "And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem."
Acts 9:28-29 = "And he was with them coming in and going out at Jerusalem. And he spake boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus, and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to slay him."
    3. WE ARE BAPTIZED:
Acts 2:38 = "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."
    4. WE MAKE OUR CONFESSION OF FAITH:
Rom 10:9-10 = "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."
Matt 16:13-16 = "When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God."
    5. WE ARE BAPTIZED BELIEVERS:
Acts 8:12 = "But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women."
Acts 8:36-37 = "And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."
    6. WE PRAY UNTO THE FATHER:
John 14:13-14 = "And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it."
John 15:16 = "Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you."
    7. WE BOW THE KNEE AND CONFESS WITH THE TONGUE:
Phil 2:9-10 = "Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;"
    8. WE SUFFER PERSECUTION:
Acts 5:41-42 = "And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ."
1 Peter 4:14 = "If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified."
Rev 2:3 = "And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted."
    9. WE GLORIFY GOD:
1 Peter 4:15-16 = "But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters. Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf."
    10. WE ENJOY SALVATION:
Matt 1:21 = "And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins"
Acts 4:11-12 = "This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."
  3. CONCLUSION:
    1. A NAME IS IMPORTANT TO PHYSICAL MAN AS THE NAME USED CARRIES WITH IT AUTHORITY, PRIVILEGES, AND SHOWS RESPECT FOR THAT PERSON.
    2. A NAME IS IMPORTANT TO SPIRITUAL MAN AS THE NAME USED SHOW UNTO WHOM WE HAVE RESPECT, HONOR AND GLORY.
    3. TO WHOM DO YOU HONOR BY THE NAME YOU WEAR?
Acts 4:12 = "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."
