Need to be Awake -- Salvation is Near

  1. INTRODUCTION:
    1. SCRIPTURE: Romans 13:11-14 = "And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. [12] The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. [13] Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. [14] But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof."

    B. THE IMPORTANCE OF STAYING AWAKE AND HOW.

  2. DISCUSSION:
    1. WHY SHOULD WE BE AWAKE AND ALERT?
      1. "Salvation nearer than when we believed." [ Romans 13:11]
      2. "The night is far spent" [ Romans 13:12]
      3. "The day is at hand" [ Romans 13:12]
    2. HOW DO WE AWAKEN?
      1. "Cast off the works of darkness" [ Romans 13:12]
      2. "Put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ" [ Romans 13:14]

Galatians 3:26-27 = "For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ."

Galatians 4:19 = "My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you."

    3. HOW TO STAY AWAKE?
      1. "Put on the armour of light" [Romans 13:12]
      2. Matthew 5:16 = "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

Ephesians 5:8-14 = "For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: [9] (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) [10] Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. [11]  And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. [12] For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. [13] But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. [14] Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light."

      3. "Walk honestly" [ Romans 13:13]
      4. Colossians 2:6-7 = "As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving."

Ephesians 5:15-16 = "See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil".

      5. "Make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lust thereof" [Romans 13:14]

Galatians 5:24 = "And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts."

1 Thessalonians 5:22 = "Abstain from all appearance of evil."

  3. CONCLUSION:
    1. AWAKE AND ALERT WE WILL NOT ENGAGE IN:
      1. Rioting, or Revelling [ASV] = From the Greek "komos" = "A revel, carousal" the consequence of drunkenness.
      2. Drunkenness. = From the Greek "methe" = "strong drink" (akin to "methu" = "wine," denotes "drunkenness, habitual intoxication, or drunk with wine."
      3. Chambering. = From the Greek "koite" = "primarily a place in which to lie down, a bed, especially the marriage bed, denoting illicit intercourse upon.
      4. Wantonness. = From the Greek "aselgeia" = Licentiousness, filty, lascivious.
      5. Note: The word is used in Jude 4 = "For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ."

      6. Strife. = From the Greek "eris" = "strife, contentions" the expression of enmity.
      7. Envying. = From the Greek "zelos" = "Envying, jealousy, with indignation"
    2. WE WILL WALK "HONESTLY", OR "BECOMINGLY" [ASV]:

Note: From the Greek word "euschemonos" = Becomingly, decently, honestly." It is used to show the contrast in the way a Christian is to act as opposed to worldly social life.

I Corinthians 14:40 = "Let all things be done decently and in order."

I Thessalonians 4:12 = "That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing."
