Some Speak Against The Lord

I.          INTRODUCTION:

A.  SCRIPTURE READING:

Malachi 3:13-14  =  Your words have been stout against me, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee?  Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts?

B.   SOME SPEAK AGAINST THE LORD:

1.        In Malachi’s day some spoke against the lord saying:

a.         That divine worship, obedience to God and repentance were all useless.

b.         That one was not better if they did these things.

c.         That one was not any worse if they refused to do these things.

2.        In our day there are many that speak against the Lord in every conceivable way  --  Consider with me a few of these for the next few minutes:

II.       DISCUSSION:

A.  SOME SPEAK AGAINST GOD’S EXISTENCE:

1.        That the idea of God is only a fable.

Comment:  Mr. Ingersoll was asked if he believed in God, he replied, “Well, I have never seen one.”  Neither had he seen electricity, pain, nor sorrow.

2.        Such people as these are fools.

Psalms 14:1  =  The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

3.        Even the heavens declare the glory of God.

Psalms 19:1  =  The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

4.        Why should the idea of God be thought incredible when humanity everywhere testifies that he has a need of God.  Man’s need of God is so great that those who know not the true God create a god for themselves.

B.        SOME SPEAK AGAINST GOD’S CREATIVE POWER:

1.        They try to explain the world in terms of evolution.

Comment:  However, the evolutionist has to start with something and he does not know how to get that something.

2.        The only explanation of creation is found in Genesis, which begins with an all-powerful, self-existing Being.

Genesis 1:1  =  In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth”.

C.       SOME SPEAK AGAINST GOD’S WORD:

1.        They deny that the Bible is God’s inspired message.

Comment:  If there is a God – and there is – it is reasonable to assume that He would communicate with man in a definite and concrete manner;  so the Bible is a reasonable thing.

2.        The Bible is inspired:

2 Timothy 3:16-17  =  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

2 Peter 1:21  =  For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

3.        It is easy to prove the Bible is true.

D.       SOME SPEAK AGAINST GOD’S SON:

1.        They say Christ was a good man but was not the Son of God.

Comment:  But if He was a good man – and he was – the He was the Son of God;  because he claimed to be the Son of God.
John 5:17-23  =  But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.  Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.  Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.  For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.  For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.  For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:  That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.      -----And good men do not lie.

2.        He was the only begotten Son of God, begotten by the Spirit and born of a virgin.

John 1:14  =  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Matthew 1:18-23  =  Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.  Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.  But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.  And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.  Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,  Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

3.        The dual nature of Jesus is seen in that he was  ---  the son of man and the son of God  ---  which qualified him as the one and only mediator between God and man – as He was part of both physical and Spiritual.

1 Timothy 2:5  =  For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

E.        SOME SPEAKS WORDS AGAINST GOD’S ABILITY:

1.        They accuse God of writing a book that man s unable to understand, which reflects upon God’s ability.

2.        Christianity is a religion to be taught and can be understood.

Matthew 28:19-20  =  Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:  Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Isaiah 35:8  =  And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.

Matthew 13:15  =  For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

John 8:32  =  And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

2 Timothy 2:15  =  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

3.        It is evident that if we understand it at all, we understand it alike.

F.        SOME SPEAK AGAINST GOD’S IMPARTIALITY:

1.        Among these are those who follow Calvinism that speak of  God electing some people to salvation and predestinating others to condemnation, without the choice of either.

2.        But God:

a.         Loved the whole world.

John 3:16  =  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

b.         Would have the whole world be saved.

1 Timothy 2:3-4  =  For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;  Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

c.         Gave His Son to taste of death for everyman.

Hebrews 2:9  =  But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

d.         Invites all to come to his eternal rest.

Matthew 11:28-30  =  Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

3.        Man makes his own election

2 Peter 1:5-10  =  And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;  And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;  And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.  For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.  But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.  Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

4.        God is no respecter of persons.

Acts 10:34-35  =  Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:  But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

G.       SOME SPEAK AGAINST GOD’S FAIRNESS:

1.        The speak of the Lord holding an infant responsible for the sin of Adam and Eve  ---  or hereditary depravity.

2.        Sin, however, is an individual thing.

Ezekiel 18:20  =  The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

3.        An infant:

a.         Is born guiltless.

Matthew 18:3  =  And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

b.         Becomes guilty of sin as it grows older and commits sin.

Genesis 8:21  =  And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

H.       SOME SPEAK AGAINST GOD’S SINCERITY:

1.        They accuse God of hypocrisy.

a.         They say that God is behind all the religious faiths, doctrines, and bodies in the world.

b.         They say that God has called one man to deny what he has called another to affirm.

c.         They say he calls one man to preach one doctrine one night and another man to preach the very opposite the next night.

2.        God is not responsible for the confusion in world religions.

Matthew 16:18  =  And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Ephesians 4:4-6  =  There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;  One Lord, one faith, one baptism,One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Philippians 3:16  =  Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.”

1 Corinthians 1:10-13  =  Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.  For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.  Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.  Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?

John 17:20-21  =  Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;   That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

I.          SOME SPEAK AGAINST GOD BY TAKING HIS NAME IN VAIN:

Exodus 20:7  =  Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

James 3:9-12  =  Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.  Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.  Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?  Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

III.    CONCLUSION:

A.  DO YOU SPEAK AGAINST GOD?

B.   IF YOU ARE NOT SPEAKING FOR GOD YOU ARE SPEAKING AGAINST HIM?

Matthew 10:32-33  =  Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.  But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
